It is used together with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Pioglitazone is not for treating type 1 diabetes.Take this medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually once daily.
It can cause headache, muscle pain, cold symptoms such as stuffy nose, weight gain, or tooth problems, sinus pain, sneezing, sore throat.
Hypersensitivity, Diabetic ketoacidosis, severe hepatic impairment. Drugs that may interact with this medicine include Aripiprazole, ciprofloxacin, clarithromycin, atorvastatin, erythromycin etc.
Risk of hypoglycemia, in combination with insulin or other oral agentsIncreased risk of CHF; not recommended in symptomatic heart failureIncreased fracture risk in females. Pioglitazone may increase the risk of bone fracture in women (usually in the upper arm, hand, or foot).
Delayed related weight gain reported with use; likely associated with fluid retention and fat accumulationPlease consult your doctor when taking this medicine if you are pregnant. Pioglitazone can cause changes in the menstrual cycle (promote ovulation) and increase the risk of becoming pregnant. It is not known whether this drug passes into breast milk.
