Ampicillin is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. It is a penicillin-type antibiotic. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections (such as common cold, flu). Using any antibiotic when it is not needed can cause it to not work for future infections.

Bitter/metallic taste in your mouth, nausea, stomach upset, diarrhea, or dizziness may occur. If any of these effects last or get worse, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Contraindicated in patients with a previous history of hypersensitivity to tinidazole or other nitroimidazole derivatives. Ampicillin may cause live bacterial vaccines (such as typhoid vaccine) to not work as well. Do not have any immunizations/vaccinations while using this medication unless your doctor tells you to. Kidney function declines as you grow older. This medication is removed by the kidneys. Therefore, elderly people may be more sensitive to this drug.

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products you may use, especially of: methotrexate, tetracyclines.

This medication is not recommended for use during pregnancy. Although there have been reports of harm in babies born to women using similar drugs, there have not been reports of harm in babies born to women using amikacin. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. This drug passes into breast milk in small amounts. However, many doctors consider breastfeeding safe while using this medication. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
