It is used to treat or prevent vitamin deficiency due to poor diet, certain illnesses, or during pregnancy.

Constipation, diarrhea, or upset stomach may occur. These effects are usually temporary and may disappear as your body adjusts to this medication. If any of these effects persist or worsen, contact your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

It must not be used in the event of known hypersensitivity or intolerance to the active ingredient or one of the excipients. Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal drugs you may use, especially: chloramphenicol, methyldopa, other vitamin/nutritional supplements.

Before taking this product, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to any of its ingredients; or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients (such as soy found in some brands), which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details. Iron may cause your stools to turn black, an effect that is not harmful. Take this medication regularly in order to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same time each day. Liquid iron supplements may blacken teeth.

There appears to be no risk when taking this drug during pregnancy.
