Famotidine is used to treat and prevent ulcers in the stomach and intestines. It also treats conditions in which the stomach produces too much acid, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
Headache, constipation, or diarrhea may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
It is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to the drug. Use caution in renal impairment; dosage adjustment recommended in moderate to severe renal impairmentPatients should not use OTC if difficulty swallowing, vomiting blood, have bloody or black stoolsNot for OTC use with other acid reducersThis drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
Some products need stomach acid so that the body can absorb them properly. Famotidinedecreases stomach acid, so it may change how well these products work. Some affected products include atazanavir, dasatinib, delavirdine, certain azole antifungals (such as itraconazole, ketoconazole), pazopanib, among others.
